Dynamic and passionate, Josep Maria Albet i Noya is the owner and innovator at Albet i Noya. In 1978, at age 20, he introduced organic practices to the winery despite widespread skepticism. With unprecedented success, Albet i Noya became the first certified organic winery in Spain. His vegetarian convictions and philosophical nature allowed him to lead the charge and he continues to inspire farmers throughout the region.
The family has been tending the land for five generations starting in 1903 and was able to purchase the estate in the 1980s after tenant farming for decades. A long period of investment and growth began to provide the winery with the most cutting-edge technology. By 1997, production had already reached 590,000 bottles.
Albet i Noya currently has 80 hectares of organic vineyards. Josep, in addition to producing over one million bottles a year, is also the president of DO Penedès and a vocal advocate for wine from Classic Penedès. Martí Albet Esteve, the fifth generation of the winery, has recently joined the vineyard department after completing his oenology studies at the Rovira i Virgili University (Tarragona, Spain) and spending time at several wineries in France and in the United States.
