"Soil. Vines. Wine.
This is the order in which great wine is made. We believe wine is created in the vineyard and nurtured in the winery."
—Peter & Rebecca Work, Grape Growers and Winemakers
Sta. Rita Hills AVA
In 1999, Rebecca and Peter Work purchased 82 acres in what would later become the Sta. Rita Hills appellation, and named it “Ampelos,” the Greek word for vine. Located in the cool climate area of the eastern Sta. Rita Hills, Ampelos Vineyard & Cellars produces approximately 5,000 cases per year and is resolute in their passion to produce hands-on, minimally invasive wines made with organic grapes.
The vineyard is the first in the U.S. to be certified Sustainability in Practice, Organic, and Biodynamic. Their methods combine a respect for tradition and openness to innovation, keeping our wine making methods as natural as possible and free of harsh chemicals. All the extra grape skins, stems, seeds, and lees are composted, and we hand punch-down our wines to minimize use of electricity. In fact, they absorb more CO2 than they produce.
The combination of carefully nurtured vines, sustainable farming, hand-sorted fruit, eco-friendly winemaking, and a true passion for the land make for wines that are elegant, unique, and supremely drinkable.
