4 Wines to Celebrate Tempranillo Day

The signature grape of Spanish wine, Tempranillo has been around for a long, long time. It’s been grown on the Iberian Peninsula since the Phoenicians settled it in 1100 B.C. With a nice balance of earthiness and fruit, Tempranillo pairs well with a wide variety of food (think tapas - but also pizza, grilled meats, polenta, and chile rellenos).

Thursday, November 8th is International Tempranillo Day and we have several delicious Tempranillos to help you celebrate!

1. Bodegas Iranzo Vertvs Vintage Tempranillo (Joven) - Utiel-Requena DO - 2017

From the oldest estate bottled winery in Spain comes this approachable and balanced Tempranillo, with fresh aromas of rich dark and red summer fruits and notes of green olive, leather and light baking spice. A soft mouthfeel with flavors of ripe blackberry, tart cherry, sage and damp earth gives way to a fresh and lively finish. Nice old world character. Made with certified organic grapes. Vegan.

2. Bodegas Matarromera "Granza" Tempranillo - Ribera del Duero DO - 2015

Based in the heart of the Ribera del Duero region of Spain, known for its Tempranillo, Bodegas Matarromera infuses tradition and innovation along with superior grapes into all of its wines. The Granza Tempranillo shows black fruit aromas with an intense and elegant complexity, and a long finish. Serve with red meats, stews, polenta dishes, aged cheeses. Only indigenous yeasts used. Wine made from certified organic grapes. Vegan.

3. Frey Biodynamic Tempranillo - Redwood Valley AVA - 2016

For a New World take on Tempranillo, look no further than the first certified organic & Biodynamic winery in the U.S. Frey's Biodynamic Tempranillo opens with aromas of violets and cassis. The smooth, elegant palate delivers flavors of elderberry, allspice, and a hint of sandalwood. Certified USDA organic. No sulfites added. Biodynamic. Vegan.

4. Tarantas NSA Tempranillo - Utiel-Requena DO - 2016

Tarantas has passed on their traditional artisan organic winemaking craft for family generations. This experience combined with organic agriculture on lime-crusted sandy soils makes for excellent wines. Their no-sulfites-added Tempranillo has an elegant nose with abundant ripe fruit, light spice and balsamic undertones with hints of chocolate. Intense flavor of ripe black fruit and balanced acidity. Certified USDA organic. No sulfites added. Vegan.
